SMH is taking MRSA very seriously. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium responsible for difficult-to-treat infections in humans. Nurses, doctors and other staff who come into contact with patients are collaborating to adopt new methods to keep patients safe. SMH will be the first hospital on the Nothshore to have the new FDA-approved Cepheid machine for rapid screening. Now, instead of MRSA tests taking up to 48 hours to deliver results, patients can receive test results in only 72 minutes. This results in a $700 savings, on average, for patients who are placed into isolation until results are received.

Last year, approximately 83% of all contributions to nonprofit organizations came from one source: individuals. According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, psychology scholars recently conducted an array of experiments that found that people are happier when they spend money on others, such as giving to charity, than when they spend money on themselves.

SMH was recognized in 2009 with the highest honor for community involvement by the East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce, the Community Involvement Award. This award honors the area business that goes above and beyond to be a part of the fabric of the community by assisting community leaders, organizations and individuals in promoting causes that make East St. Tammany a better place to live.

Slidell Memorial Hospital
Slidell Memorial Hospital is a full-service 182-bed acute care not-for-profit community hospital. During 2007, the hospital provided services to almost 100,000 patients. Founded in 1959, SMH is the third-largest employer in St. Tammany Parish, employing 1,300 full, part-time and pool clinical and administrative employees. SMH serves as a primary healthcare resource for families in St. Tammany Parish, LA; Pearl River County, MS; and the greater Mississippi Gulf Coast region.
